Gluten-Free Vegan Plum Galette
It’s time for a delicious and healthy galette here on Soulfully Tasty!
This is yet another tasty creation for you, my friends. I made sure to stick my rule of using non-processed ingredients and add nutritious value to the recipe.
First, what is a galette? If this a new type of dessert for you, then let me tell you a little bit about what a galette is and why it is different then a tart. The galette is a flat, round pastry cake that is topped with fruit. It’s sort of a tart actually that is not baked in a pan. The galette versus a tart is typically free-form and rustic looking, with the dough edges folded up around the filling. It’s a fun way to play with pastry if you ask me! :) And the other fun part is that you can do a savoury or sweet filling. Too many options to choose from, so you can’t go wrong with any.
For my first galette, I went for a sweet filling, and since I haven’t used plums this fall, I went for it. Beautiful coloured, juicy and plump plums. I love plums so much. While growing up, it’s been a family tradition to make plum jam in the fall. Lots of plums to clean, cut and deseed to make the delicious smooth paste that would satisfy our sweet tooth during the winter. Oh, and how can I forget the plum compote? We did it all! My mom and grandmothers were the best at making preserves. Good times!
The one thing that you need to get right with a galette is the pastry dough. Yes, you can definitely buy pastry from the store, but the satisfaction to make your own is greater. It’s not as difficult as you may think. I’ve experimented a bit with my dough and had more then a couple of failures until I reached the gluten-free dough that I was satisfied with. The rolling of the dough needs to be handled with care, as you would with any pastry dough, but it’ll make you a delicious flaky crust that will give you the perfect bite. The variation of flours that I went after work well together and adding white chia seeds enhances the nutrition value of this crust. Since vegan butter is not a choice of baking for me, I went for coconut oil, and it was the right call. Make sure to chill the coconut oil, but don’t let it harden too much. When it’s solid enough that you can scoop it out easily, then it’s perfect for adding to the flour.
The filling of the galette is pure fruit, with little non-processed sugar added in the filling, no starches. Plums have enough flavour and texture, so just let them do the talk when it comes to taste. I went for a plum spread first, with a hint of vanilla, before adding the plum pieces on top, just to add extra smoothness to the galette. It’s my Soulfully Tasty touch. :)
And lastly, go for the almond slivers on top of the crust. They do make a difference in the texture of this dessert. Added crunchiness to the galette crust is the way to go.
You need to give this galette a try, friends. Take it as a kitchen experiment that you’ll go through, but it’s been tested already, and you’ll reap the result with just a little work. It’s a perfect afternoon treat, a naturally sweet, and healthy indulgence that you won’t feel guilty about while enjoying. It’s one Soulfully Tasty galette!
